The Headland Cup 2024
On 10th July 2024 The Headland Hotel set out onboard Phil Trebilcock’s fishing boat in Newquay, Cornwall to show their support to the teams competing in The Headland Cup.
The dedication of the women rowing was awe inspiring, and the Headland team were delighted to show their support from the fishing boat with cheers and encouragement. It was a close race with all teams working hard in choppy conditions to race from below the old lifeboat hut, to the harbor, out into the bay, and then back to cross the finish line at Newquay Harbor. The four teams of women used their strength to row for approximately 25 minutes along the race route. Team Vigila came in first place, with the winning team being awarded with the beautiful silver trophy. Before it was The Headland Cup the trophy had a history of being awarded to the first place Cocker Spaniel at the Newquay Agricultural Show in 1948! The tradition of Gig Rowing from Newquay Harbor continues, and The Headland aims to support the traditional sport taking place so very close to its iconic cliff top location.
